Umuahia, Abia State - Allegations of financial misconduct have rocked the Abia State government, with sources revealing that the Commissioner for Finance, Mike Akpara, allegedly takes home a staggering N10 million monthly, while other Commissioners receive N3.2 million. Meanwhile, workers in the state are being forced to forfeit their salaries.
According to insiders, the Commissioner's monthly allowance includes N5 million, N1.5 million FAAC allowance, and N3.2 million paid to all Commissioners, comprising N1 million salary, N1.25 million Exco allowance, and N400,000 security allowance.
In contrast, during the Okezie administration, Commissioners received N196,000 as salary and N500,000 Exco allowance, totaling N696,000 monthly. Governor Oti's aides, including heads of agencies and senior aides, allegedly receive an additional N350,000 to N500,000 monthly, averaging N1.5 million.
The Abia State government has yet to implement the wage award for workers, despite being the only state in Nigeria yet to do so. The government's apparent insensitivity to workers' plight has sparked outrage, with critics accusing Governor Oti of prioritizing his aides' lavish allowances over the welfare of the state's workforce.
The allegations have sparked calls for accountability and transparency in the state's financial management. The government's response to these allegations is eagerly awaited, as the people of Abia demand answers and justice.
