In a dramatic and humiliating encounter, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe was ordered out of his bulletproof SUV by soldiers at a military checkpoint in Aba, Abia State. The incident occurred on Thursday, following the killing of five military personnel at Obikabia junction.
Abaribe, representing Abia South Senatorial District, was on his way to attend a funeral ceremony in Obingwa when his vehicle was stopped at a military barricade in Itu Ngwa village. Despite his police security detail's attempts to intervene, the soldiers insisted that the senator exit his vehicle. He was detained for a period before being allowed to proceed.
The senator reportedly called Governor Alex Otti to request a statement to calm the tense situation, but the governor declined, fearing it might exacerbate the situation. Abaribe was stopped again by soldiers on his return journey and detained briefly before being released.
This incident highlights the heightened tensions in the region following the killing of military personnel and the subsequent deployment of security forces.
