The Federal Government has filed a lawsuit against all 36 states in the Supreme Court (SC/CV/343/2024) regarding the autonomy of local governments. The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), lodged the suit on behalf of the federal government on May 20.

The federal government is seeking a Supreme Court directive to:

1. Stop state governors from unilaterally removing democratically elected local government officials.
2. Authorize direct transfer of funds allocated to local governments from the federation account, as per the Constitution.
3. Prohibit governors from establishing interim committees to manage local government operations, which violates the democratic system.
4. Prevent governors, their representatives, and associates from accessing or interfering with funds allocated from the Federation Account meant for local governments in states without democratically elected local government systems.
The lawsuit aims to protect the autonomy and democratic governance of local governments, as enshrined in the Constitution.
