Rivers Elders and Opinion Leaders Condemn Governor Fubara's Demolition Scheme

Elders' Council

A delegation of prominent elders and opinion leaders in Rivers State, including Rt. Hon. Kingsley Ogundu Chinda, Hon. Kelechi Worgu, Amb. Desmond Akawor, Rt. Hon. Ikunyi Ibani, Hon. Tony Okocha, and Sen. Olaka Nwogu, visited the Rivers State House of Assembly Quarters on Sunday to assess the situation following Governor Siminialayi Fubara's planned demolition of the complex.

The delegation expressed deep concerns over the recent events, with Rt. Hon. Kingsley Chinda praising the construction of the House of Assembly Quarters as a testament to the state's progress. He advised Governor Fubara to govern in accordance with the law and respect the provisions of the constitution.

Rt. Hon. Ikunyi Ibani and Sen. Olaka Nwogu also condemned the planned demolition, emphasizing that the legislature is an arm of government that should be defended. They noted that the House of Assembly Quarters was built with taxpayers' money and urged the Governor to reconsider his decision.

Speaker of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, commended the elders for their visit and concern. He reiterated that the House of Assembly Quarters is one of the best legislative quarters in West Africa and was built by the immediate past Governor, Nyesom Wike, barely two years ago.

The Speaker emphasized that the House of Assembly did not invite the Governor to demolish the building and that any attempt to do so without their consent is an assault on democracy. He stressed that the Rivers State government is made up of the Executive, the Legislature, and the Judiciary, and that the Governor cannot unilaterally break into the House of Assembly Quarters without an invitation.

Martins Nwachukwu reports that the visit by the elders and opinion leaders of Rivers State to the House of Assembly Quarters highlights the importance of preserving democratic institutions and the need for harmonious coexistence among the three arms of government.
