Falana: Rivers Assembly Sittings Outside Complex Not Recognised by Law

Rivers State House of Assembly

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has declared that any sitting by the Rivers State House of Assembly outside its complex is not recognised by law.

Governor Similanayi Fubara had issued an executive order relocating the Assembly's sittings to the Government House Auditorium, citing the unsafe state of the complex. However, Falana argued that this move violates the principle of separation of power and the legislature's independence from the executive.

Falana cited the Oyo State case, where the Supreme Court ruled that an impeachment carried out in a hotel deviated from the Constitution. He emphasized that only the properly constituted members of the House of Assembly can decide where to hold their meetings, and any sittings outside the complex will not be recognized by law.

This development raises concerns about the legitimacy of the Rivers State House of Assembly's actions and the ongoing political crisis in the state.
